It's safe to visit. Jammu, Ladakh & Kashmir has been doing well both in domestic and international tourism since last 10 (Ten) years.
Ladakh is located at high altitude, nearly 11,500 feet above sea level. At this altitude people often find difficulty in breathing or are likely to fall prey to altitude sickness. It happens due to a low level of atmospheric oxygen. It is advisable to give yourself enough time to acclimatize before engaging in any physical activity.
Please Note During the summer months (MAY/JUNE/JULY), light woollens are required for Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Sonamarg and occasionally in Srinagar. Spring & autumn (MARCH/APRIL/AUGUST/SEPTUMBER/OCTUMBER) are cold and woollens are necessary. During winter (NOVEMBER/DECEMBER/JANUARY/FEBUARY), temperatures sometimes reach minus 10 deg C in Srinagar city and heavy woollens are required.
What are the symptoms of High Altitude sickness? How long does it take to get acclimatize in Ladakh?
Some common symptoms of high altitude sickness include giddiness, loss of appetite, lack of sleep and difficulty in breathing. The best way to get acclimatize in Ladakh is a natural rest for at least 48 hours.
There are varieties of accommodations available in Ladakh. The region is sprawling with the innumerable hotels, guest houses, homestays, and hostels. People can easily find accommodation in Ladakh without any hassle.
The ideal time depends on your plan and itinerary. Generally, it needs 5 to 10 days to cover the major destinations in Ladakh. If trekking is your main goal then you may have to increase the duration as some long trekking trails require a more prolonged time to complete the tour.
T-shirts and shorts are good clothing options during the daytime but after the sunsets the climate gets chilly and one requires a jacket and pullover. If you are trekking to the peaks of 4000 meters above sea level, you need warm woolen clothes. Rain and snowfall can take place in June and July and if you are travelling in this season then you should carry windcheaters and raincoats. If you are into trekking, a pair of waterproof shoes is a must.
There are several important tourist destinations that you can think of visiting when in Ladakh. These include: Pangong Lake, Drass War Memorial (Kargil), Hall of Fame (Leh), TsoMoriri Lake, Nubra Valley, Khardungla Pass, Thiksey Monastery (Leh), Stakna Monastery (Leh), GurdwaraPathar Sahib (Leh), AlchiChoskor Monastery (Leh), Zanskar Valley, Lamayuru Monastery (YuruGompa) (Kargil), Changla Pass, Shanti Stupa, Spituk Monastery (Leh), Prayer Wheel (Leh), Likir Monastery (Leh), ChemreGompa Monastery (Leh), Suru Valley , Zanskar the Virgin Valley, Matho Monastery, Sand Dunes Leisure Park SumoorNubra, NamgyalTsemo Monastery etc.
In the present scenario, there are no trains that move between the Jammu and Srinagar. However, Indian Railways is working on the plans and soon the service would become available, until then it is all the way road journey.
